Notes:
In the first event of the Words and Music Show’s 2016 fall season, series organizer and host Ian Ferrier kicked off the night at Casa Del Popolo on the guitar in a performance featuring Elizabeth Lima on vocals. Throw Collective member Annamaria Dosseva read original work, including “Sex as a Metaphor for Playing the Piano,” “The New Religion,” and “Branding.” As described in a document entitled “September Bios.doc,” “Montrealer, somatic educator, poet & performer” Speranza Spir took to the stage with “The Tea Series,” featuring her collaborator, Denis Lafond. To lead off the second set, “playwright and spoken word artist” Riley Palanca performed the first spoken word piece he ever wrote and a cento with lines sourced from popular songs. Jordi Rosen performed atmospheric pop songs including “The Star Family” and a cover of Ben Jonson’s “Song: To Celia” set to music. Ricky Leach followed with two poems/songs. In the third and final set, “natural phenomenon” Catherine Kidd performed two of her albums’ title tracks, “Hyena Subpoena” and “Sea Peach,” which Kidd dedicated to Jordi Rosen. “Canadian activist and musician” Stefan Christoff closed the show with an instrumental piano piece written as a reflection on the changing culture of Montreal.
