Notes:
The July 23rd, 2017 Words and Music Show at Casa Del Popolo began with an appearance from poet and translator Hugh Hazelton, who read “Horror Vacui,” “Iguana,” and “Silences Of The Grand Master,” which appears in “Vesuvius” (Wolsak & Wynn 2015), a book of translations of work by Brazilian poet Zulmira Ribeiro Tavares. Author of “Things I Will Tell You When I Am Dead” (Hidden Brook Press 2017) Kathleen Whelan read “Hope” and “Blueberry Pie.” The first set ended with “eclectic electric guitar” by Ananda Suddath, who performed original instrumentals like “Cold Mirror Music” and “Devonshire,” and a cover of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” as performed by Toro Takemitsu. Following the intermission, David Bateman read an unpublished poem called “By The Gender Neutral Washroom I Fell Down And Slept,” as well as “If I Win The Lottery,” and pieces from his book “A Mad Bent Diva” (Hidden Brook Press 2017), including “Tampax Tale,” “Virginia,” and “Niagara Falls.” Eugénie Jobin and Frederique Roy, also known as Ambroise, ended the night with musical interpretations of Paul-Marie Lapointe’s poetry and original pieces in French including “Message De Ton Corps” and “Hibernations.”
