Notes:
The Words and Music Show began 2019 at Casa Del Popolo with what is described on the Facebook event as “a rare appearance” by “star performer” Brendan McLeod, who explains on the recording that he braved the snow and “almost died like three times” driving to Montreal from Toronto. McLeod performed a mix of comical songs about the strangeness of life and a scathing critique of the pope and politicians, before completely changing gears to read a “love poem” and a piece called “Questions For You and I When You Have Cancer.” To close his set, McLeod performed a piece from and discusses the concept behind the tour for his show, “Brain.” “Wordsmith Wolfe Girardin” also performed a spoken word piece accompanied by David Serin “on the sounds,” after which Natalia Yanchak, “vocalist for the band The Dears,” read “a straight-up short story” called “Lieutenant Andowitz Goes Apple Picking.” Aaron Finbloom and a group of his friends joined their voices together for two distinct performances as the Conversation Choir. After the intermission Jason “Blackbird” Selman performed some of “his always deep poetry and music,” including two pieces about “the forgotten Beat” Bob Kaufman, highlighting Selman’s skill with words and on the trumpet.
