Side A of this recording contains a recorded lecture by UBC English professor Warren Tallman from his undergraduate course, ENGL 205: Introduction to Poetry. This 50 minute lecture was recorded on November 19, 1986 in the Buchanan Buildings at UBC. In the recording Tallman lectures about the Romantic poets, with special attention to the works of William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Tallman reads, recites, and offers commentary on the following poems and writings: "Among All Lovely Things My Love Had Been," "A Slumber did by Spirit Seal," "Boat Stealing (excerpt from the Prelude)," "from The Prelude: Book 1: Childhood and School-time," "I Travelled among Unknown Men," "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," "Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour. July 13, 1798," "Lucy Gray (or Solitude)," "Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood," "She Dwelt among the Untrodden Ways," "Strange Fits of Passion I have Known," "There was a Boy," "Three Years She Grew," and excerpts from Dorothy Wordsworth's journal. Unidentified students are occasionally audible throughout the recording answering questions posed by Tallman. Side B of the recording contains a recorded lecture by UBC English professor Warren Tallman from his undergraduate course, ENGL 312: Studies in Poetry. This 50 minute lecture was recorded on November 25, 1986 in the Buchanan Buildings at UBC. In the recording Tallman defines and lectures about poetic vocabulary including discussions about the concepts of "vowel stress, consonant stress, primary stress, and juncture," Ezra Pound's "phanopoeia, melopoeia, logopoeia," Ernest Fenollosa's "metaphor as transfer of energy," "Mother Nature and Mother Tongue," "syntax and semantics," "abstract and abstract real," and "open form and close form poetry." Unidentified students are occasionally audible throughout the recording asking questions, answering questions, and contributing to the class discussion.
